How do you make a difference in a messed up world?

Today I was doing my usual scrolling through social media and was honestly, slightly overwhelmed with all of the mess in our world. It’s hard to have so much information about a world so big and being so small and feeling completely powerless about the massive problems in the world. Many countries lack human rights that we can’t even begin to understand – especially growing up ‘free’. How young children are suffering the consequences of actions legalized by the all too complacent government – who in doing so make their own lives comfortable while completely messing up the lives of those that haven’t even begun to understand the value of their voices.

There were more things, and all in the space of 5 minutes. It’s insanity to think that we can try and think we could fix all of these issues. Sin is real folks, and because of it death wanders the planet like a dark fog, covering and smothering as much good and innocence as possible. It’s completely unimaginable to try and understand how “a God that can be so good, will allow all of this chaos to happen around, and to good people.” His point of view is way too big for us to even try to reach for, but He knows what He’s doing – as well as being true to His sovereignty which from the beginning allowed man to make his/her own choices despite Him knowing what’s best and which way to go.

It’s the age old mystery and yet leaves us all asking that question at least once in our little human lives. I understand that not all situations are based on decisions made, but those hard situations are still happening in a fallen world. Nothing can or ever will be perfect until the end happens and the new begins. But what can I do to at least help this world make better decisions to get on brighter paths or also closer to their maker to endure the harder times.

It’s like that story of the man on the sea shore covered in star fish – like millions of them. He was walking along and picking them up one at time and throwing them back into the ocean. When asked, “Why bother, you’re not going to make a difference to all of them. Why do it?” He turned around and said, “I do it because it makes a difference to this one” and then proceeded to throw another starfish back into the water.

I felt this was God reminded me of how to be effective in this world and make a difference. It’s one step at a time and one life at time. Let me know what your thoughts are, I’d love to learn and understand your perspective. Share in the comments section below.

I'm a woman finding my way through life as the wife of Tim, the mom to 3 growing kids and trying to maintain some sort of self through it all. I hope you enjoy reading how I journey with my troops through this thing we call life.

  1. So true, one step at a time, the bit we can do makes a world of difference, we keep going, never growing weary, never getting getting discouraged by what we see with our naked eyes, Great stuff Shavs
