Homeschool socialising – focus off me and learn about you

Ahh, the joys of homeschooling my brood. There’s an assumption that many people make about homeschooling and that is that the children aren’t as “socialised” as “school going” kids. I would completely understand this theory if we were living in 1998 and there was no technology to help a sister out. But, because we have Facebook, whatsapp and the internet – getting together with other families that share the same lifestyle isn’t as hard as it used to be.

Extra mural clubs have given a lot of room for homeschoolers to join in and so it’s also a great place for moms and kids to connect and start their friendship journeys together. So, the reason why I said at the beginning, “aaa, the joys of homeschooling” is because today is one of those days where being with people is the lesson of the day. You know, we’re living in a time where selfishness is such a great big monster that is put on a pedestal, all in the name of “feeling good”. Unfortunately that grooms bad and shallow character.

I’m having to teach my kids that sometimes you have to cultivate relationships with people that aren’t like you and that don’t come easy. So today we’ve arranged a “play date” with a family that is fantastic for my one child but hard work for my other one. I won’t say who so that I can protect the relationship should it go either way – good or bad.

When I told my one child that we are going to be going to this family’s house, she was annoyed and complained about how she’s going to be bored and doesn’t know what she’s going to do or say. I then, as a mom/teacher encouraged her to dig deep and start practicing ways to learn about the other person rather than look for things she likes. I told her that by learning about another person – she turns the focus off of herself and the way she’s feeling, and starts to actually see and understand some one else. Even though that person may be completely different to her.

She has started doing this with other friends in her life and has actually enjoyed what she’s learned. Today is her greatest test. I’m excited for her because it’s going to be such a great growth moment for her and if she gets it right, then she will be able to face getting to know anyone because she would have hopefully learned the key to unlocking someone else’s expression and not in the aid of self gain.

So, here’s holding thumbs – pray it works people. I’m going in with one eye closed.

How do you deal with difficult characters in your life? do you avoid them, or get to know them and understand their point of view – it might explain why they are the way they are………..

I'm a woman finding my way through life as the wife of Tim, the mom to 3 growing kids and trying to maintain some sort of self through it all. I hope you enjoy reading how I journey with my troops through this thing we call life.
