My “Silly Season” is over!

December is kind of here and I can already feel the buzz in the air as schools start to close, parents start to schedule their last few play dates and shops just become just a little bit more unbearable than usual. Yip, and our city becomes this little honey pot that all of the other South African bees rush to. The roads become silly and everything in general becomes silly. Bank accounts get siphoned for all things Christmas and school stuff for next year. But to me this time marks the beginning of rest! My “Silly Season”is all year round and it officially stops after the last End of Year presentation!

I turn in my mommy taxi keys and grab hold of that extra bit of tea, or coffee and lie down on the couch for as many moments as I can- in my own home. Yes, I’m a stay at home mom, but I don’t get to lounge around a lot.

Yes there will probably be the occasional play date (because school kids need them and we love our friends) but extra murals are done! Guys, I drive at least a 800km a week just getting around to everything. Now that may not be much to the truck drivers out there – but let’s just add in that school needs to be supervised and assessed. Relationships need to be coached so they don’t kill each other. Snacks need to be thought of, shopped for and rationed so that my ever growing tribe doesn’t break our food budget. Friendships need to be maintained (for my kids that is) and that’s just the normal every day stuff.

I’m a stay at home mom. I love it and I honestly don’t mind being around my kids 24/7. Some may call me absolutely nuts, but they’re my focus. Not my world, but definitely where I invest most of my energy and skill. But like all wise human beings, there is a time to work and then a time to rest/play. I definitely opt for the rest part.

So, as I browse the world of the inter web and watch as every body else promotes, gives things away and shares their Christmas cheer. I sigh, and just tell myself, “no, not this year. Maybe next time, but now it’s time to enjoy this couch and not run around trying to be something I have absolutely no capacity for. Rest, Shaveh. Enjoy the solitude. Even if it’s just for 5 minutes. Embrace it. My time will come.”

So, if you know me personally. There will probably be more braai’s than usual. There will be too much family time to even count on my hands. Friends I haven’t seen in forever will be cherished. Shaveh will be around. Mommy taxi Shaveh, has hung up her hat and will only pick it up in the new year. Enjoy the “Silly Season” – whatever that means to you.

I'm a woman finding my way through life as the wife of Tim, the mom to 3 growing kids and trying to maintain some sort of self through it all. I hope you enjoy reading how I journey with my troops through this thing we call life.
